Pre arrival procedures
Employees and freelancers need to obtain a residence permit. Non EU individuals should apply for their work permit at the Greek consulate.

Employment visas
Non EU citizens are only able to obtain residence and work permits if they qualify for a job pre-announced by the local authorities. They are also permitted if they meet certain qualifications for self-employment (minimum of € 60,000 in a deposit bank account); or come into the country as investors (minimum of € 300,000 of capital).

No work permit is required for EU citizens.

Tax year
The Greek tax year runs from 1 January to 31 December.

Tax returns and compliance
Most Greek national employees working in Greece pay their tax through payroll withholding and they are required to file a tax return.
Personal tax returns should be filed in May, regarding the tax registration number following the end of the tax year concerned.
